CURRICULUM VITAE

     Jae Y. Kim is an attorney at law and has a practice focused on asset protection, bankruptcy law, commercial litigation, commercial transactions, real estate and collection law.  Formerly a partner with a major northern New Jersey law firm, he also worked with the bankruptcy department of a national law firm before opening his own law office approximately twenty (20) years ago.  With close to thirty (30) years of practice, Mr. Kim has represented consumer and corporate debtors, secured and unsecured creditors, Chapter 7 Bankruptcy Trustees and Assignee for the Benefit of Creditors in the Federal and State Courts of New Jersey and New York.

    From 2011 to 2015, Mr. Kim served as a MUNICIPAL COURT JUDGE for the CENTRAL MUNICIPAL COURT OF BERGEN COUNTY.  In that capacity, he routinely oversaw and administered a calendar call of up to 100 case per day, while still maintaining my private law practice. 

      Mr. Kim has been a repeat guest commentator on Media-Korea Television’s (“MKTV”) Together program, speaking on issues relating to asset protection, collections, commercial litigation, insolvency and bankruptcy law.  He has lectured for the New Jersey Institute for Continuing Legal Education as well as a speaker at the New Jersey Bar Association Bankruptcy Bench Bar Conference.  

     Mr. Kim was a part-time instructor of Bankruptcy Law at FAIRLEIGH DICKINSON UNIVERSITY, and has two (2) published opinions: In re: Ehret, 238 B.R. 85 (Bkrptcy., D.N.J. 1999) and Lever, et al. vs. Thomas, et al., 340 N.J. Super. 198 (App.Div. 2001).  As one of the few Korean-American bankruptcy attorneys working in the greater New York/New Jersey area, Mr. Kim is regularly consulted by his bar colleagues on Asian business practices and culture.

     In 1992, Mr. Kim received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Boston University.  Then in 1995, he received his Juris Doctorate degree from Quinnipiac College School of Law at Hamden, Connecticut.  Mr. Kim is a member of the New York State Bar, the New Jersey State and Federal Bars and is admitted to practice before the State Courts of New Jersey and New York, United States District Courts for the District of New Jersey, the Southern District of New York, the Western District of New York, the Northern District of New York and the Eastern District of New York; as well as the United State Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.  

     Mr. Kim resides in Bergen County, New Jersey.  Although he volunteers his time with many local civic organizations, Mr. Kim enjoys his pro bono work with the New Jersey Bankruptcy Lawyers Foundation and proudly served on the board of advisors and was legal counsel to the Korean American Association of New Jersey.
